Tourism in Richmond County

World class chefs will be coming to Cape Breton Island to take part in one of the most exciting events in dining that Cape Breton has ever experienced. 10 super chefs from all over the world will descend on Cape Breton to share their knowledge and experience with 10 top notch Cape Breton Chefs and 10 Junior Chefs from all over Canada. Each grouping, made up of an experienced local chef, a promising junior chef and the international representative, will create a menu that will surpass your wildest imagination. Each dish will have ingredients native to Cape Breton presented as never before to provide a feast fit for nobility and served on tables across the island at some of the most unique venues that will delight the pallet, in settings that highlight our history and while hearing some of our best traditional entertainment all rolled in to an experience you will never forget.
Richmond County is proud to have the St. Peter’s National Historic Site named as one of the locations where a venue will be set up which will give guests the opportunity to sample the cuisine of this extraordinary experience. The Richmond event will take place on August 30th and is being classed as the Ultimate Picnic with tickets at $65.00 per person, it will run from 7pm until 10:30pm. Tickets went on sale June 20th, go to rightsomegood.ca for details.
What a backdrop this area will make, as the feast is served up from the sea and prepared by Chef Javier Vargas Guimaray of Peru, one of the finest chefs and assisted by our best local and Jr. chefs, guests can walk along the canal, where the water flows between the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the magnificent Bras d’Or Lakes on the other which just happens to be the location of Nicolas Denys settlement of 1650. As guests take their seats to enjoy a sumptuous three course meal, created with ingredients such as mackerel, snow crab, oysters, pork, wild berries and corn, the sun will be slowly slipping down under the horizon. One could almost imagine the presents of Monsieur Denys standing at the head of the table and tipping his hat to this master of culinary excellence. What could be more perfect. Those lucky enough to partake in this adventure are in for a treat of a lifetime.
Richmond is very proud that from all the chefs that entered the competition from all over Cape Breton, two excellent Chefs were chosen from this area. Each chief had to submit an original receipt using ingredients from Cape Breton. Adam Brenner, Chef at the Bras d’Or Lakes Inn in St. Peter’s, submitted an original and inventive take on Surf n’ Turf that fused charred sweet corn salsa with blackberry gastrique to create something uniquely different which won him a place on this noteworthy team. As well Richmond native Dillon Carter, Chef at the MacDonald Country Inn in St. Peter’s, submitted a very unusual dish. Have you ever dabbled with the idea of adding lobster to your cake recipe? Well Dillon did and his creation won him a coveted spot on the foodie team. As well as these two fine chefs from our area four Jr. Chefs were chosen from NSCC , Brandy Currie, Katie Wall, Martha MacDonald and Justin Yap. They will fill out the roster of 10 Jr. Chefs who were chosen from all over Canada, who will assist with preparations.
Besides the St. Peter’s National Historic Site these foodie adventures will also take place at the Judique Community Center, Little River Harbour, Orangedale Train Station, Ingonish Beach, the Gaelic College, Cape Breton Miners Museum, Cruise ship Pavilion/Big Fiddle, The Lakes Golf Club and Fortress Louisbourg. These foodie adventures will run between August 25th and September 4th.

It seems only fitting that St. Peter's be one of the locations chosen to hold this excellent adventure in dining, since one of the best gourmet restaurants in Cape Breton the Bras d'Or Lakes Inn is located over looking the St. Peter's Canal. Visitors coming to Cape Breton make a point to stop in at the Inn to taste creations of Chef Jean Pierre Gillet, which equals that of the finest chefs anywhere.
