Visual Art Series

From the Celtic Colours International Festival web site, comes this line up of events for the Visual Art Series being held on the Cape Breton Heritage Coast section of Cape Breton.
On October 8th, he following three events will take place: All About Quilting @ the Causeway, will be held at the Historic Church of St. David's, Port Hastings from 9:00AM to 7:00PM. Admission is free to the public. A Quilt Show and Sale of traditional and contemporary quilts made by Cape Breton Quilters will be displayed at the Historic Church of St. Davids. The local Quilt Guild invites you to join them at their Quilting Bee which is happening on site. There will also be hands-on activities including demonstrations of magic pillowcases, machine quilting, "stack & whack" placemats and napkins, rabbit pincushions, crazy quilt embellishing...you can watch or try out these demonstrated craft projects, there are kits available, and you take home a free pattern. Learning to Draw / Learning to See, will be held at the J. Franklin Wright Gallery at Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre, Port Hawkesbury from 1:00PM to 3:30PM. The admission is $20 which includes supplies. Learning to draw requires learning to see. By taking advantage of right brain strategies, we'll cover concepts of line and form as well as negative and positive space, using pencil, charcoal and erasers. Exercises will include blind and modified contour drawings, open and closed shape drawings, an upside down landscape and a proven shortcut for drawing faces. All supplies are included. Exhibit: Living in a Painting, Celebrating Cape Breton Island en Plein Air will be held at the J. Franklin Wright Gallery at Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre, Port Hawkesbury on October 8th, from 4:00PM to 9:00PM as well as on the following dates October 9th from 10:00AM to 4:00PM, October 12th from 4:00PM to 9:00PM, October 13th from 4:00PM to 9:00PM, October 14th from 4:00PM to 9:00PM, October 15th from 4:00PM to 9:00PM and on October 16th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. These events are free to the public. The Island of Cape Breton is astonishingly beautiful; the landscape is as rich as the culture. This special exhibit features paintings created by renowned visual artists Christopher Gorey, William Rogers, Kyle Jackson, Liam O'Maonlai, Lynda Lou MacIntyre, Patsy MacKinnon, Marc Brzustowski, Nancy MacLean, Joanne MacDonald, Carolyn Burns, and Tom Ryan. All of these pieces were selected from those created during the Celtic Colours en Plein Air 2009, an event in which the artists painted outdoors amid the spectacular scenery during last year's Celtic Colours festival. In this case the painting was done during three "Paint Outs" in Inverness, Meat Cove, and Sydney. The artists submitted the works they created, and from them the pieces for this beautiful exhibit were chosen. This exhibit launches the 2010 Celtic Colours en Plein Air event, wherein Paint Outs will be held in Lake Ainslie (Saturday October 9), Louisbourg (Monday October 11), the Top of the Island (Wednesday October 13) and Iona (Friday October 15). On October 11th, Celtic Colours en Plein Air: Louisbourg Paint Out, will take place at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, Louisbourg from 10:00AM to 5:00PM. The admission for this event is $15 or $10 if you register for more than one Paint Out. Celtic Colours en Plein Air is a series of outdoor painting events wherein visitors and locals alike will have the opportunity to view Plein Air Painters at work in the picturesque autumn landscape. This Paint Out takes place in at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic site, where the past comes alive through the restored stone and wood buildings and pedestrian streets. Artists may also paint in the charming fishing village of Louisbourg. Anchor artist Steven Rolls. Artists can participate in up to 4 Paint Outs, and they can submit the work they create to be evaluated for a Major Exhibit in Celtic Colours' Visual Art Series 2011. Each Paint Out takes place in a community where Celtic Colours concerts are happening nearby, and there are a wide range of Cultural Experiences to take in. For a painter, the Island of Cape Breton is a gift. Its landscape is beautiful and diverse, from rolling farmlands and colourful hardwood trees, to stone boulder cliffs and windswept pines, to dramatic folds of mountains plummeting down to sandy beaches. The Celtic Colours International Festival is the perfect way to enjoy it, as the music and the culture are as beautiful as the landscape. This event is not a workshop, so there is no instruction, and artists are required to bring their own supplies. October 14th, the Local Artisan Display and Sale will take place at St. George's Channel Hall in St. George's Channel, Richmond County from 10:00AM to 5:00PM. There is no admission for this event. Display of Artisanal crafts and hand made items presented by local crafters. This sale is a rare chance to see creations by people who do not often have their work exhibited.
